Emergency Dental Services in San Francisco

Monday, November 21st, 2011

You can call 9-1-1 for a many different emergencies, whether a crime is being committed or someone is dangerously sick or injured. But who do you call in a dental emergency? Does the hospital handle these cases? Will an ambulance come?

An emergency dental situation is not like other emergencies. Often, a dental problem is one aspect of a greater emergency. For example, physical injuries sustained in an accident could include damage to the teeth, gums, or jaw.

In other cases, a dental emergency is not critical or life threatening. Such emergencies include severe toothaches or chipping a front tooth the evening before you are scheduled to make some kind of important appearance.

When Are Emergency Dental Services in San Francisco Necessary?

Some emergencies arise in which a patient’s life is not at risk but they are in great pain or need immediate dental assistance that cannot wait for a regularly scheduled appointment.

If someone’s life is at risk, you should always call 9-1-1. This service is for any kind of serious emergency, including medical emergencies. Critical, life-threatening dental emergencies are medical emergencies.

What if nobody’s life is at risk, but they are in unbearable pain, which is making it difficult or impossible to function? In these cases, you would most likely call your regular dentist, especially if the problem is persisting during your dentist’s business hours. But if the pain strikes after hours or on weekends, you may need to contact an emergency dentist instead.

Some emergencies are of a cosmetic nature. There may or may not be pain involved, but these are cases in which a regular dentist won’t be available to solve a dental problem in time for some important event. A classic example is the bride who chips a front tooth the night before her wedding.

What does an emergency dentist do?

The service that any emergency dentist provides is making dental care available to patients at any time, including evenings and weekends.

But emergency dentists may do more than meet a bride with a chipped tooth late Friday night for a quick fix. Emergency dentists may be called to hospitals or to patients’ homes to handle serious emergencies.

Here at the Blende Dental Group, we handle all types of dental emergencies. Our top priority is making sure our patients get the care they need. Some are handled in our office. Others are treated at the hospital. And we even make house calls through our sister organization, House Call Dentist.

Emergency Dentist for Seniors and Patients with Special Needs

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Emergencies are stressful, and we don’t always know what to do when an emergency strikes. For example if there’s a fire or car accident, most of us know that we should call 9-1-1. But who do we call in case of a dental emergency?

When to Call an Emergency Dentist

In any emergency where a life is at risk, you should always call 9-1-1. If a life-threatening medical emergency requires an emergency dentist, the emergency workers (paramedics, emergency room staff) will engage an emergency dentist.

However, people often face dental emergencies that are not life threatening. Some of these emergencies are health related while others are of a cosmetic nature.

For example, if a patient is experiencing severe pain, which over-the-counter pain relievers do not alleviate, and that patient is unable to function normally, it would be a good idea to contact an emergency dentist. In these cases, the patient’s regular dentist would be called during business hours, but if the problems occur during the evening or over a weekend, then an emergency dentist may be required.

A cosmetic emergency is usually not health related or life threatening, although if these situations are not resolved, eventually, they could pose a health risk. For example a patient who chips a tooth or loses a crown just before an important event like graduation, wedding, or some type of performance, would constitute a cosmetic dental emergency.

Seniors and Special Needs Dental Emergencies

Seniors and patients with special needs have to deal with extra challenges in the face of an emergency. They may have greater difficulty getting access to emergency care because transportation is difficult or impossible for them. They may also have a much harder time coping with the emergency itself or be more susceptible to the stress of a strange environment (like an ambulance or hospital) and unfamiliar people (emergency workers).

While an emergency may require these patients to be transported to a hospital, it is much better to treat them where they are most comfortable: at home.

House call dentistry is perfect for seniors and special needs patients. But during a dental emergency, a house call can drastically reduce the stress that these patients experience.

Again, house calls may not always be possible in an emergency, but for seniors and special needs patients, emergency house calls can mean the difference between a highly stressful episode and a mildly inconvenient situation.

San Francisco Emergency Dentists on Call

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Like all emergency workers, San Francisco emergency dentists must put the welfare of the general public and the health of their patients first.

It takes a special person to work in the medical field. Doctors, nurses, dentists, surgeons, and EMTs require strength of character that allows them to face and resolve trauma. Many of these medical professionals make themselves available for emergencies. They are on call and ready to help people in need at a moment’s notice, which means at any time, they have to drop what they’re doing and go to work. They put their personal lives second to helping others.

Most of us work standard business hours, Monday through Friday from 8-5. Our nights and weekends belong to us, not to our employers or customers. We relish our free time and wouldn’t dream of giving it up.

Working on-call means doing just that, giving up one’s personal time for emergencies. This involves an enormous sacrifice on behalf of those professionals who have committed themselves to putting the health and welfare of others first.

San Francisco Emergency Dentists

Dentists are often under-recognized for their work in emergency situations. We tend to think of dentists as professionals who keep regular business hours. They relax in the evenings and golf on the weekends.

But that’s not always the case.

San Francisco is beautiful city with plenty to do. Like anyone else, dentists enjoy restaurants, theater, and sporting events. But unlike most citizens, San Francisco emergency dentists willingly interrupt their leisure activities for the greater welfare of their patients.

Dental Emergency Team in San Francisco

One of the best ways to cope with emergencies is to have a team in place, a team that knows how to work together efficiently and effectively—a team that includes specialists and experts who can address a range of potential problems.

The Blende Dental Group is one such team of dentists, specialists, and staff members. The team includes in-office dentists as well as a greater network of specialists. Together, they can tackle any dental emergency.

In addition to the general dentistry services that the Blende Dental Group provides, they cater to patients with special needs (anxiety, aging, disabilities) and are experienced in working with children (pediatric dentistry). It’s no surprise that a team with this level of commitment to dental health includes San Francisco emergency dentists who are always on call.

The Blende Dental Group’s emergency dental services are available in their offices, at hospitals throughout San Francisco and the greater Bay Area, and in some cases, at patients’ own locations.

Is There a San Francisco Emergency Dentist on Your Contact List?

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

In a big city like San Francisco, emergencies happen every day. Our city’s police officers, firemen, EMTs, and hospital workers all do an excellent job working hard, long hours to handle emergencies. They are on-call and ready to help, at all times.

But not all emergencies warrant an ambulance ride to the nearest hospital. Your home may incur damage from a storm. Your pet can get injured or become suddenly ill. You might chip a front tooth the evening before you have to attend a big meeting or event and need to see a San Francisco emergency dentist.

When emergencies happen, our bodies respond. We get nervous and upset, our heart rates speed up, and it may be difficult to think clearly. That’s why the best way to cope with emergencies is to be prepared.

And the best way to prepare for any type of emergency is to have an emergency contact list on hand.

Your San Francisco Emergency Contact List

When you put together your emergency contact list, make sure you consider your own needs. Do you own a home? Do you have pets? Your answers to these questions will inform which contacts you put on your list.

Here are a few suggestions to get you started compiling an emergency contact list:

  • Your doctor and any specialists whose care you are under
  • Your regular dentist and a San Francisco emergency dentist
  • Your vet and an emergency vet if you have pets
  • A neighbor, close family member, or friend
  • Local police, hospital

Make sure those close to you know about your list. Keep a printed copy near your home phone, and enter the numbers in your mobile phone. You can also set up your emergency contacts in your email address book.

Choosing a San Francisco Emergency Dentist

Many people keep their emergency contact lists simple. They just include their own service providers – the family doctor and dentist. They know in a medical emergency, they’ll likely go to the emergency room. Dental emergencies are often forgotten in emergency contact planning.

Ideally, in an emergency, you’ll try to see your own dentist. But that might not be possible. Many dentists don’t offer night and weekend appointments. Your dentist may be overbooked or out of town. If you need a cleaning or checkup, that’s not a problem. You can wait. But if you’re facing a dental emergency, you need to see someone right away.

Check with your dentist to see if emergency services are available. Even so, make sure you choose a backup for those times when your dentist unavailable.

Sooner or later, everyone needs to see a dentist. Ideally, patients will get cleanings and exams twice a year and will see a dentist on a regular basis. But many people only go to a dentist when they have a toothache or other dental problem. Some people even put off seeing a dentist until there’s an emergency.

When there’s a dental emergency, many people aren’t sure who to call or where to go. Should you dial 911? Head to an emergency room? Call your regular dentist? What if you need a specialist, such as periodontist or endodontist?

When choosing a dentist, few people consider the possibility of ever having to see a dentist who is available on-call for emergencies.

Finding an Emergency Dentist in San Francisco

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Emergencies happen. We all know that when there’s a medical emergency, we can call 911 or drive to a nearby hospital with an emergency room. But those are medical emergencies.

What about dental emergencies?

If you’re facing a dental emergency, your first step should be to call your dentist. Many dentists will make themselves available to their patients when there is a serious emergency. Your dentist’s call service may also refer to you another emergency dentist in San Francisco.

If you don’t have a regular dentist, then what should you do? And what can you do if your dentist is not available? There’s a good chance your dentist keeps regular business hours, but emergencies can happen anytime, including nights and weekends. What if your dentist is dealing with another emergency, is out of town, or simply cannot squeeze you into the schedule?

Update Your Emergency Contact List

The best way to deal with any emergency is to be prepared. Keeping a list of emergency contacts is the first step in emergency preparedness. That list should include the contact information for your dentist and any dental specialists that you see regularly as well as an emergency dentist.

Contacting an Emergency Dentist in San Francisco

Unfortunately, not everyone is prepared. Many people have good intentions and plan on putting together an emergency contact list but never get around to it.

Here are a few things you can do if you need to get in touch with an emergency dentist in San Francisco right away:

  • First, assess the emergency to determine whether it’s critical. A broken or chipped tooth, cracked crown, or moderate toothache is a noncritical dental emergency and you can likely address the problem with your own dentist. Severe pain or profuse bleeding can be critical, so you should proceed with the emergency steps below.
  • If your dental emergency is serious or if you feel your life is at risk, you should call 911 and seek care at an emergency hospital immediately. Many emergency medical facilities have dental staff in-house or on-call, and if not, they may be able to refer you to an emergency dentist in San Francisco.
  • For less serious dental emergencies, call information or check the yellow pages or another local business directory. These directories are likely to have listings for dentists that specifically provide emergency services.
  • Another good resource is the web. If your emergency isn’t dire, you can probably take a minute or two to search online for a dentist. Be sure to check dentists’ websites to see if they offer emergency services.

Emergencies are unfortunate, but they do happen and sometimes cannot be avoided. Prepare yourself for emergencies by putting together an emergency contact list, and be sure that list includes your own dentist as well as a dentist for emergencies.

San Francisco Emergency Dentist Makes House Calls

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

In a medical emergency, most people know exactly who to call and where to go. They dial 9-1-1 or head straight to the nearest hospital emergency room. But when there’s a dental emergency, many people aren’t sure what to do.

Should they call their family dentist? Contact a hospital? What if the person who needs care is bedridden, housebound, or has special needs that prevent quick transport?

In San Francisco, emergency dentist services are in high demand. San Francisco is a small but heavily populated city. Emergencies happen all the time. When the emergency is dental-related, the Blende Dental Group is on call and ready to treat patients either at their locations or at our office.

Emergencies Happen

When patients encounter a dental emergency during normal business hours (usually Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.), they are in luck. Most dentists will fit emergency appointments into a regular day’s schedule. So, all you have to do is call your dentist, explain the emergency, and get to the office.

But emergencies don’t adhere to normal business hours. They can occur in the early hours, late at night, and during weekends. During these hours, many dental offices are closed and impossible to contact.

Additionally, many dentist offices aren’t equipped for special needs patients and few dentists make house calls for those patients who cannot travel.

San Francisco Emergency Dentist: Answering the Call

The Blende Dental Group is renowned for treating patients with special needs, including patients who are coping with dental anxiety and those who are housebound.

Along with our sister organization, Bay Area House Call Dentists, our San Francisco emergency dentist team answers the call for dental emergencies in the Bay Area.

We are available for emergency appointments in our offices, in hospitals, and when necessary, at our patients’ location.

Update Your Emergency Contact List

We all know that keeping important emergency numbers on hand is a smart way to stay safe. It’s essential that every emergency list include a contact for dental emergencies.

Additionally, make sure your emergency dentist provides the level of care needed. In the case of patients with special needs, make sure the emergency dentist is qualified and experienced in the special needs field.

What to Do When You Need an Emergency Dentist

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

When you stumble into a medical emergency, you know exactly who to call – most likely, the emergency services (9-1-1). But what happens when you chip or lose a tooth or suddenly experience excruciating pain in your teeth or gums? Who do you call then?

You Need an Emergency Dentist

Most dental offices are open during normal business hours – Monday through Friday from around 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some have more flexible hours, offering evening and weekend appointments. But most don’t offer 24-hour service seven days a week.

If you experience a dental emergency during regular business hours, you might be in luck. There’s a good chance that your dentist will fit you into the day’s schedule to accommodate your emergency.

On the other hand, if you experience a dental emergency at night, in the wee hours of the morning, or over the weekend (especially over a holiday weekend), then you might find it impossible to contact your dentist, let alone get a last-minute appointment.

Emergency Dental Services

Dentists who offer emergency services make themselves available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That includes nights, weekends, and holidays. These professionals are willing to assist patients who need them most urgently – and are willing to accommodate those patients on the spur of the moment, by working on-call.

When you call an emergency dentist, they will try to see you immediately. Usually, they’ll ask you to come into the office. Assuming your needs are strictly dental and you’re able to travel the distance to their office, you can simply head to the dental office where you’ll be taken care of.

But some emergency patients cannot get to the dentist’s office. They may be disabled, immobile, or unable to travel for some reason. For such patients, dental emergencies may go unresolved, which can result in suffering from pain or discomfort until they can finally make arrangements to see a dentist.

House call dentistry solves this problem by providing emergency dental services to patients at various locations. Instead of asking a patient to come into the office, the office (on wheels) goes to the patient. And modern technology has enabled house-call, emergency dentists to equip mobile dentistry units with enough instruments and tools to treat most dental emergencies.

Other emergency dental cases are treated in a hospital setting. Hospital dentistry is common in conjunction with medical treatments that require hospitalization, such as injuries sustained from a car accident, which may require both dental and medical attention. House call dentists can easily travel to a local hospital to treat patients in need of emergency dental care.

The Blende Dental Group’s Emergency Dentist

The Blende Dental Group and our sister organization, Bay Area House Call Dentists both offer emergency dental services in San Francisco and throughout the Bay Area. We provide in-office, house-call, and hospital services for patients who need an emergency dentist.
