You can call 9-1-1 for a many different emergencies, whether a crime is being committed or someone is dangerously sick or injured. But who do you call in a dental emergency? Does the hospital handle these cases? Will an ambulance come?
An emergency dental situation is not like other emergencies. Often, a dental problem is one aspect of a greater emergency. For example, physical injuries sustained in an accident could include damage to the teeth, gums, or jaw.
In other cases, a dental emergency is not critical or life threatening. Such emergencies include severe toothaches or chipping a front tooth the evening before you are scheduled to make some kind of important appearance.
When Are Emergency Dental Services in San Francisco Necessary?
Some emergencies arise in which a patient’s life is not at risk but they are in great pain or need immediate dental assistance that cannot wait for a regularly scheduled appointment.
If someone’s life is at risk, you should always call 9-1-1. This service is for any kind of serious emergency, including medical emergencies. Critical, life-threatening dental emergencies are medical emergencies.
What if nobody’s life is at risk, but they are in unbearable pain, which is making it difficult or impossible to function? In these cases, you would most likely call your regular dentist, especially if the problem is persisting during your dentist’s business hours. But if the pain strikes after hours or on weekends, you may need to contact an emergency dentist instead.
Some emergencies are of a cosmetic nature. There may or may not be pain involved, but these are cases in which a regular dentist won’t be available to solve a dental problem in time for some important event. A classic example is the bride who chips a front tooth the night before her wedding.
What does an emergency dentist do?
The service that any emergency dentist provides is making dental care available to patients at any time, including evenings and weekends.
But emergency dentists may do more than meet a bride with a chipped tooth late Friday night for a quick fix. Emergency dentists may be called to hospitals or to patients’ homes to handle serious emergencies.
Here at the Blende Dental Group, we handle all types of dental emergencies. Our top priority is making sure our patients get the care they need. Some are handled in our office. Others are treated at the hospital. And we even make house calls through our sister organization, House Call Dentist.
