What is a Hospital Dentist?

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Most dental treatments and consultations take place at a dentist’s office. We’re all accustomed to dental offices with a reception area, waiting room, dental chairs, and all that dental equipment – x-ray machines, hygiene instruments, and various dentistry supplies.

But in some cases, a dentist might need to treat patients outside of a traditional dentist’s office. Many dental procedures are done in a hospital, and there are a number of good reasons why.

Hospital Dentist

A hospital dentist either works at a hospital or is on-call to come to the hospital on an as-needed basis. In addition to helping patients who are already hospitalized, a hospital dentist performs complicated, scheduled procedures in a safe hospital environment.

At a hospital, there is a full staff of medical personnel, including highly trained doctors, nurses, and anesthesiologists. For patients who require extensive dental work or dentistry in conjunction with other medical procedures, treatments, or surgeries, a hospital is an ideal place to have complex or extensive dental work done.

Hospitalized Dental Patients

Many patients who receive professional dental care in a hospital are already hospitalized.  They may be waiting for a heart valve surgery, undergoing head and neck radiation for cancer, or battling a severe infection. Most of these patients will need to see a dentist before their medical treatments can begin. Others may be receiving long-term care or recovering from surgery.

Still other patients are at the hospital due to an emergency or injury, which requires the expertise of a dental professional. An injury to the mouth area may require a dentist. These could be injuries that are solely limited to the teeth, gums, or jaw bones or they could be dental injuries that were sustained along with other physical injuries to the body.

There are also patients who go to the hospital specifically to have dental work done, like many other “same day surgeries”.

One-Sleep-VisitTotal Dentistry Method

With the Blende Dental Group’s One-Sleep-Visit Total Dentistry Method, you can go to sleep and wake up with all your dental work completed.

After an initial consultation, which includes a full exam, x-rays, diagnosis, and a treatment plan, we schedule a hospital visit. A team of dental professionals is coordinated so that all work on your teeth and gums can be completed in a single day, all while you are sound asleep.

This is done through sedation (or sleep) dentistry, a method in which IV sedation or general anesthesia is administered so that you sleep soundly while our team completes your dental work. Later, you’ll come back to our offices for a follow-up visit. With One-Sleep-Visit, you can enjoy a healthy, beautiful smile without having to schedule appointments with various specialists over the course of several months or years.
