We find that patients with Parkinson's disease often require care beyond that which can be provided in a conventional dental office setting.
Though these patients may have received a lifetime of excellent care from their local family dentist, as the disease progresses and the symptoms advance, it's essential that a patient with Parkinson's find a dentist who can take appropriate medical safeguards to prevent complications from dental treatment.
We know that Parkinson's disease affects multiple regions of the nervous system. Forty percent of patients with Parkinson's disease suffer from depression. Both the medications that are used to treat depression and the medications used to treat Parkinson’s are among the medications that can cause Xerostomia (“dry mouth”). Xerostomia usually leads to rampant and rapid tooth decay. Left untreated, a serious infection can develop that may compound health problems for the patient. We also know that more than 30% of Parkinson's patients develop dementia - a condition resembling Alzheimer's. At the onset of dementia, it often becomes difficult for patients and their caregivers to ensure daily oral hygiene. At the Blende Dental Group, we partner with trained hygienists who specialize in treating patients with special needs in their own home. Please ask your assigned Blende Dental Group Patient Care Coordinator for information about the in-home hygienist. We are proud to provide our patients with these types of options to receive their dental care.
